AbstractA study of socio-economic, technical & economic aspects of municipal. solid waste recycling was conducted for the city of Jakarta. It was found that residents store of solid waste for resale and sell the materials for extra income, with incomes ranging from Rp.3000 up to Rp. 10000 per month. Also found that the garbage pickers and scavengers engaged in scavenging the waste at the sources around houses and at the disposal sites had incomes ranging from RP. 1000 up to Rp. 7500 per day. Most of the garbage pickers and scavengers migrated from other provinces and had little formal education. Working in unhygienic conditions has had its toll on their health. Furthermore, it was found that traders and wholesalers obtained very high profits. From the manufacturing activity, to get some picture regarding this activity, two cases of manufacturing activities are outlined, namely of paper and plastic. Most of the manufacture's operate using a simple process. Use of virgin raw material in combination with reclaimed material provide the highest benefit to the manufacturer.
