Abstract | This study is concerned with a research carried out in a steel mill for the optimization of manpower levels for breakdown maintenance. In this study the distribution of various kinds of delays contributing to equipment downtime has been included in the simulation model developed for the minimization of total system costs due to service and downtime. Advantages of employing multiskilled workers over the separate Mechanical/Electrical repairmen have been examined by means of sensitivity analysis. Effect of delays on the total system cost have also been mentioned by means of graphical analysis. The distribution of throughput time (Total equipment downtime) is analyzed at various manning levels and improvement to in throughput time by reducing delays through improved system of information flow and control are also highlighted. The results obtained are compared with the existing manpower level of the organization in which the study was conducted. |
