Abstract | Urban bus transit network problems are dealt extensively in the literature. Although the design of bus routes is of initial concern, this issue is scarcely dealt with in the the literature. Facility location mod e ls is seen to have the potential to over come these drawbacks with little complications. This facility location model formulation treats the routes as facilities and the pairs of zones as customers whose ยท demand for bus transit usage are to be covered by the optimal route set. The model formulation for a problem with many-to-many travel pattern is presented here. Urban bus transit network problems are typically complex and some important planning issues cannot be captured within the model; such issues may be qualitative in nature, unknown, or unrevealed by the decision-maker. Furthermore, there are often numerous solutions to a mathematical formulation that are nearly the same with respect to modeled issues but that are drastically different from each other in decision space. A technique is proposed to generate a small number of alternative solutions that are feasible, perform well with respect to the modeled issues and are significantly different with respect to the selected routes in each solution. A methodology, which combines the facility location model and the technique for generating alternatives, is proposed as a decision tool in bus transit network design. The use of this method ology is demonstrated by means of two case studies. |
