AbstractThis research deals with a transportation problem of material parts in the field of construction of transmission systems, with particular reference to the Transmission and Distribution Construction (TDC) office of Taiwan Power Company (Taipower) . The problem ยท could be identified as a large "capacitated plant location problem". However, it was solved by a hierarchical approach, i.e., first, the parts allocation to each warehouse is deterimined by a mixed integer linear programming model; second, the minimum number of trucks and the specific load of each truck for each warehouse are determined by set covering model . A heuristic method and exact method for the set covering problem were studied, and it- was found that the heuristic method performed satisfactorily in this context. A case study of a transmission line construction project was made, showing the usefulness of the overall approach.
