AbstractLeadership is essential for organization achievement. During crisis situation, leadership becomes more visible than in normal situation where leadership may diffuse throughout the organization. Good leaders in normal situation may not be good ones in crisis situation. Hence, this study aims at identifying leadership competencies in crisis management and focuses on Facility Management Sector in Thailand. This is because Facility Management is multidisciplinary in nature. Thus, it needs multi-competencies to achieve facility management’s purposes. The methodologies used in this study were conducted in two phases. The first phase is Delphi Technique. Expert panel was formed from twenty-four experts in facility management sector in Thailand. The basic qualification of these experts is that they must be in facility management sector at least fifteen years. Delphi Technique was conducted by three rounds of survey. The results from the third round survey generated 102 leadership competencies. Based on the statistical results of the third round survey using Delphi Technique, twenty-nine (29) leadership competencies statistically form a consensus from experts in facility sector. The second phase of the study used factor analysis to identify leadership competencies from the questionnaire survey. The questionnaire was designed using twenty-nine leadership competencies received from the Delphi Technique in the first step. The field questionnaire survey of 350 practitioners in facility management sector was conducted during February to May 2017. About 290 usable questionnaires were returned which is about 82 % rate of response. The factor analysis suggested five different groups of leadership competencies that are required for crisis management in facility management sector. They are emergency preparedness, crisis communication, emotional intelligence, leadership skills, and problem-solving. By comparing to competencies studied by International Facility Management Association (IFMA) and The British Institute of Facilities Management (BIFM), it is found that many of these competencies identified in this study are relevant. This is a novel empirical study of leadership competencies in a growing business sector in Thailand (FM) and possibly other countries in Asian region. Leaders in FM can benefit from recognizing the leadership competencies that are critical during crisis management. This study is limited to the experiences of FM experts in Thailand. Its empirical results can help human resource managers to develop appropriate training programs and policies for FM practitioners as well as helping junior FM practitioners to develop competencies essential for leaders in the FM sector.
