Abstract | An empirical study has been conducted on four metro construction projects in Vietnam to assess knowledge transfer (KT) in this particular context. A two-stage framework was developed based on grounded theories and models on knowledge management (KM) and KT. The first stage examines factors influencing KT from foreign consultants to local partners. The second stage explores relationship between transferred knowledge and work performance of the recipients (local partners). Methodology adopted in this research is quantitative survey, supplemented with 'project studies including in-depth interview, observation and document review. Survey results identified six key factors affecting the success of KT from foreign consultants to local partners. These are transferor's willingness and capacity to transfer, transferee's intent and capability to receive, environment in which the transfer is carried out, and subject of the transfer, i.e. knowledge itself. Quantitative data analysis prioritize transferor & transferee-related factors as the most important ones while project studies shed lights to the decisive roles of attributes relating to the transfer context and adaptability of the knowledge. Results also prove that transferred knowledge helps to improve the performance of local partners in the metro construction projects in Vietnam. Research findings contribute to academic literature in the way that KT through consulting practices in the infrastructure construction environment in a developing country is empirically studied. |
