| Abstract | The shipboard team is unique in its composition, operation and behaviours, very different from other workgroups or shore-based teams that have short life and crew of mix nationalities. The objective of this study was to explore, investigate and explain working of a socio-culturally diversified shipboard teamwork from the perspectives of the Indian seafarers. Research used qualitative design with inductive process and grounded theory methods. Primary data was collected through personal interviews and focused group discussions with the respondents. A purposive sample of forty-four Indian seafarers covering all ranks and departments of the shipboard team were selected. Secondary data was collected through industry periodicals. Through the thematic analysis nine conceptual categories namely; Socio-Cultural Diversity, Onboard Socialization, Seamen’s Behavioral Pattern, Leader’s Behaviors, Onboard Relationship, Oneness and Bonding, Onboard safety; Deck and Engine department Relationship and Ship’s Performance were identified. Further, a relationship framework of onboard team effectiveness was developed using these conceptual categories from the perspectives of Indian seafarers, this is how they make sense of their experiences. The insights gained from the research can be used to enhance shipboard team’s working and safe operation of the ship. |
