Abstract | In such a fast-developing economy like Vietnam, the financial industry, particularly the banking system, plays a crucial role, and innovation is key to prosperity and sustainable development of the system in response to crises and competitive environment. Despite this important role, there has been a shortage of studies on the antecedents of innovation in the banking system. This dissertation, therefore, aims to develop a research model which will assess the impacts of top management team on both product/service and process innovations at Vietnamese commercial banks. The study applies investigation method using structured questions with 352 managers of different levels at fifteen Vietnamese banks. The findings indicate that product/service innovation is influenced by (1) banking network; (2) technological network; (3) international experience; (4) stock ownership, (5) risk-taking and (6) organizational resources, in which international experience and stock ownership have negative impacts. Process innovation is influenced by (1) technological network; (2) international experience; (3) stock ownership; (4) organizational resources, in which the impacts of international experience and stock ownership are also negative. The results of group comparison also indicate there are significant differences in innovation performance and some dimensions of organizational culture between banks managed by different groups of executives based on characteristics like education level, international experience, owing stock. The analysis results of constructs show that the levels of product/service and process innovation are only average, with most ratings at the middle score. Drawing on these results, the dissertation suggests several recommendations to improve innovation capabilities at Vietnamese banks including (1) improve managerial external network with technological experts; (2) improve managerial external network with other bank managers; (3) establish an innovation-supporting culture through allocation of resources and (4) encourage a risk-taking culture. Finally, the dissertation presents some limitations and directions for future research. |
