AbstractThe performance of a natural convection dryer using indirectly heated air was studied with respect to the dryer air temperatures , air flow rates and the initial moisture content of the rewetted paddy. The paddy was exposed. in thin vertica1 columns from both sides to drying air which was indirectly heated by a pipe heat exchanger using a rice-·husk fired furnace. Development of moisture diffusivity equation for predicting bulk drying of paddy was found to be a function to moisture ratio. This model. .1.eads to better predictions than t he average moisture diffusivity currently in use. An increase in the drying air temperature resulted in increased moisture removal rates and the influence of high moisture content of paddy on moisture removal rates was minimal. No. significant differences were noticed in the head rice yields of the paddy dried under shade and inside the dryer up to 6o c and above this temperature it resulted in reduced head rice and increased amounts of broken. The performance of heat exchanger was analyse d both experimentally and theoretically .
