AbstractThis dissertation originates from a trending phenomenon known as digital transformation – the widespread practice of numerical techniques to create business value. As a side effect of digital transformation, huge amounts of different types of data are generated rapidly. This data is called big data. The growth of data as a profitable resource has encouraged companies to use data for innovation (OECD, 2021). Managers and practitioners need to know exactly how big data analysis drives innovation (ZareRavasan, 2021). However, while some firms provide empirical examples of success, many still lag behind. To specify the important factors for success in the digital age, it is necessary to analyze how companies can exploit the potential of big data for innovation (OECD, 2021). Much less talked about, however, is the empirical evidence on whether big data analytics capabilities make companies more innovative, which is harder to find, especially for incremental and radical innovations. In this dissertation, a research model is developed based on a resource-based view and dynamic capabilities, the aim of which is to analyze the effect of big data analytics capability on innovation capability as a mediator of total market orientation and moderator of market turbulence. A quantitative method based on previous literature and an online survey will be applied. Survey data is collected from both large private and public-listed companies. The analyzed data are responses from 363 senior executives in emerging economies in Vietnam. The relationships of the conceptual research model are analyzed using structural equation modelling (SEM). The findings show that the capability to analyze big data increases the total market orientation and this in turn affects the capability to innovate. Thus, the responses show that total market orientation is an important mediator between big data analysis capability and innovation capability. The results not only improve our knowledge of big data analytics and innovation capabilities but also ensure the best solutions to develop the firm’s big data analytics capability. The study also helps researchers and practitioners focus on the influence of big data analysis to reflect the effectiveness and efficiency of innovation.
