AbstractThis study explores private equity and venture capital from the viewpoint of the private equity/venture capital firm’s viewpoint. Objectives of the research included: 1) to examine the private equity/venture capital’s facilitating role in supporting entrepreneurs to exploit opportunities and 2) to investigate the role of the private equity/venture capital in accelerating start-ups and growth in young firms. To achieve these objectives, a conceptual framework was established from the literature review, accompanied by three hypotheses that related anticipated relationships between private equity and venture capital knowledge and experience and business growth (Hypothesis 1), private equity and venture capital monitoring and opportunity exploitation (Hypothesis 2), and private equity and venture capital networking facilities and business growth (Hypothesis 3). The hypotheses were tested using questionnaire which was distributed to a stratified random sampling of firms from different industries in Thailand (n = 249). Analyses included descriptive statistics, point biserial correlation, and factor analysis. There were significant correlations between investor knowledge and experience, academic credentials and formal qualifications and opportunity exploitation. It also showed significant relationships between investor monitoring and opportunity exploitation, investor monitoring and opportunity exploitation, and knowledge and experience and business growth, monitoring and business growth, and investor networks and business growth. There were also relationships between investor monitoring and networking and opportunity exploitation. Thus, all three of the hypotheses were accepted. The implication of the study is that private equity and venture capital investors and their knowledge and experience, monitoring facilities and networking is critical for startup firms’ business opportunities, opportunity exploitation and growth.
