AbstractPreliminary investigation to study the methods to detoxify mimosine in leucaena leaves showed that soaking in water for 48 hours at 30ํ c effectively removed all mimosine. In the experiment to determine the suitability of treated leucaena leaf meal as ingredient for tilapia Oreochromis niloticus feed, nine experimental diets were formulated to contribute 25%, 50% and 100% of the protein as plant protein using soaked (soaked in water at 3oํ c for 48 hours); sundried (sundried for 2 days) and commericial leucaena leaf meal respectively, balanced by protein from fish meal. A control diet containing wholly fish meal as protein source was also included. All diets were iso-nitrogenous (30% protein) except for diets containing 100% plant protein (21% protein). The 70 day feeding trial was conducted with duplicated treatments in 20 circular concrete thanks housed within a recirculating water systems. There was a trend of reduced growth performance and feed utilization efficiency with an increase in leucaena leaf meal incorporation for all treatment. Generally, the soaked leaf meal gave a significantly better growth response than the commercial or sundried leaf meal. Mimosine present in the latter two treatments may have contributed to the poorer growth.
