Abstract | Processed water hyacinth (dried, recently composted and old composted water hyacinth) were incorporated up to 37.5% to replace protein sources in a control diet formulated according to National Inland Fisheries institute (NIFI) tilapia pellets and tested as diets for Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Monosex male fish, about 30 g each, were reared in 4 m3 cement tanks in static and recirculating water systems. The experiment was conducted for a period of 84 days. Nutritive values and digestibility of experimental diets, fish growth, body composition, feed utilization, as well as residual fertilizer effects of excreta and uneaten feed were determined. The growth response curves indicated that NIFI pellets were the best whilst other diets led to comparable but lower growth. Residual fertilizer effects were observed to benefit fish growth at the first period of the experiment but caused dissolved oxygen problems later. Feed utilization were similar on the the basis of food conversion ration, protein efficiency ration, and apparent net protein utilization, Fish body composition slightly varied in terms of moisture, crude protein, and crude lipid contents but the fish fed diets which contained processed water hyacinth had higher ash content than those fed control pellets. |
