AbstractA simulation model of energy demand in a particular chemical industry is proposed on the bas is of a step by step socio-economic technical analysis , using the nitrogen fertilizer industry , the largest energy consumer in the chemical industry of China , as a case study for middle- or long-term forecasting. The nitrogen fertilizer- industry or so-called ammonia industry is divided into eight different technological modes in the study. These are characterized by the feedstock used, scale of production and technical level. The production and energy consumption of the ammonia industry in the year 1982 are selected as the data base. The evolution of the end-use efficiency and the penetration factor of various final energy products to certain useful energy, and the scenario of the nitrogen fertilizer demand by the year 2000 are established by combining the historical trends and the targets set by the Chines government. To forecast the energy demand of the ammonia industry until the year 2000, an accounting program is established and the linear programme is applied to solve the optimal allocation problem. The results of the forecasting for the years 1990, 1995 and 2000 are given along with the sensitivity analyses of the optimal solutions of the linear programme.
