AbstractSolar drying of natural rubber sheets using transparent and opaque roofs over the drying chambers was studied. The drying rates in the constant rate and falling rate periods, were found . at a critical The ranges of moisture contents of the rubber sheets investigated were from 37 to about 1 percent. The transition from constant rate to falling rate was found water content of 12 percent. The solar drying times of four to seven days during April and May were nearly as fast as conventional smokehouse drier under similar drying conditions, but was twice as fast as the open sun drying. The quality of the dried rubber sheets from the solar drier was better than that of sun dried rubber sheets. Cost of solar drying was found to be 1.65 times higher than cost of conventional smoke drying at fuelwood cost of 1 baht per kilogram and 10 per cent interest rate. The average ultra violet transmittance for normal incident direct radiation of the polyethylene film collector covers was found by calculation from published spectral absorbance data to be 0.584.
