Abstract | Numerous mathematical models are available to predict the clean bed filter efficiency and filter performance during the ripening period of filtration. In this study, initial collection efficiency calculated by unit bed element method (PAYATAKES et al.; 1973 and YAO and O'MELIA's method (1971) using initial c/co values were compared with the initial filter efficiency calculated from theoretical equations. It was found that modified HAPPEL and modified LEE-GIESKE formulations could be used for suspended particle larger than 1 micron and modified HAPPEL, RAJAGUPALAN-TIEN and modified LEE-GIESKE formulations could be used for submicron suspended particles. O'MELIA-ALI model (1978) and CHIANG-TIEN model (1983) are the two recent approaches which describe satisfactory the ripening stage of filtration. In this study, O'MELIS-ALI model for deep bed filtration was modified with the consideration of the change of porosity and sphericity of suspended particles and filter grains were then verified with an extensive existing experimental data and additional experimental data obtained in this study. An algorithm was developed to search the model parameters of CHIANG-TIEN model in a rational way. The model parameters of both these two models were found to have systematic trend with operating variables of filtration like filtration rate, influent concentration, filter depth and size of filter media. From these model parameters evaluated from a limited number of filter experiments, empirical equations can be made, which can then be used to simulate filter performance at any operating condition. This will be helpful in the rational filter design and upgrading of the existing filter. |
