AbstractOne of the noted shortcomings of water quality data measurement in the river basin is that the location of monitoring stations and frequency of data collection is not properly thought of. This makes data interpretation difficult and the expense high. The study aims to develop a simple methodology for water quality monitoring system and demonstrate its application in Tanshui River Basin in Taiwan, the Republic of China, specifically. Factor analysis used for determining which important parameters are to be measured in the Tanshui River Basin monitoring system. Although the optional number of stations in each river can be determined, for management reasons a few additional stations especially at the confluence of the river and obvious places for practical purposes may be necessary.
