AbstractIn order to simulate the behavior of pollutants in a harbor, a hydrodynamic and a dispersion model had been developed. The two-dimensional hydrodynamic model was developed to compute the instantaneous water surface level and mean flow velocity. The two-dimensional dispersion on model was used to predict the behavior of both conservative and non-conservative substances. The hydrodynamic model was controlled by time varying water levels at the harbor entrance and was solved with a multi-operational finite difference scheme at each time step right after the hydrodynamic parameters had been calculated. The model scheme was verified by comparing the numerical solution to the analytical solution of simple cases. The stability of the model was found to be very perfect. The model was applied to Taichung Harbor in Taiwan, R.O.C. The high tidal elevation change, the heavy rainfall in typhoon period and the strong wing blew in the monsoon season were the special characteristics of Taichung Harbor. According to these properties, the storm effect and the with effect were discussed. The storm effect did not affect the flow pattern very much but had significant effect on the pollutant concentration distribution in the harbor. The wind had negligible effect on both the hydrodynamic and dispersion conditions. The decay rate had sensitive effects on the concentration distribution of non-conservative substances.
