AbstractThis study deals with marine pollution due to shipping in the ports of Thailand (Bangkok) and ROC (Kaohsiung and Keelung) and to determine the magnitude of the pollution problem caused by merchant fleet. A detailed investigation was carried out on a sample of 24 ships calling at Bangkok Port. From the sample, it is possible to estimate the type and quantity of wastes generated onboard for different classes of ships The survey also includes the types and condition of waste disposal systems available onboard. Further studies were made on statistics available from the three harbors considered. The amount of pollution due to shipping estimated in this study indicates that due to the lack of monitoring and enforcement measures. large quantity of untreated waste is discharged directly without and treatment. Another major source of pollution is from cargo handling operations. The pollution problem will be severe if the trend continues to be unchecked. A comparative study of various onboard treatment facilities available was made to provide necessary data for selection of equipment installation. It is recommended that the legislation on pollution control in both countries must be tightened. Further resources should be made available to the port Authority of carry out the task of enforcement and control.
