AbstractTraditional, the Jar Test has been used to assess the suitability of flocculation treatment for a given raw water. Unfortunately, the jar Test suffers from a number of disadvantages. The new method of assessment of flocculation, spiral Flocculator, has been claimed to be a better method than the Jar Test apparatus and a good method for continuous assessment of flocculation. This study deals with the comparison study between spiral Flocculator and Jar Test, and with the quantitative study of flocculation. In the first part of the quantitative study an attempt has been made to check the validity of Tambo and Watanabe's model for the prediction of the effluent turbidity. Also the effective energy dissipation of the flocculator has been studied. In the second part, a computer simulation of Boadway's equation has been done to explain the floc growth during flocculation. The experiments reveal that the advantages of spiral flocculator is in terms of the effective energy dissipation which. It has better energy dissipation compared to that of Jar Test. However, the flocs size in Spiral Flocculator seems to be overestimated relative to the real flocculator and Jar Test. Also, the modification of Boadway's model to predict the temporal variation of floc size has been proposed.
