Abstract | A study of socio-economic aspects of recycling potentials of municipal solid waste from the point of generation, to the collection system and finally to the disposal site was conducted in the city of Manila. It was found that households positively support recycling of recoverable materials for a number of reasons. Garbage crew on the other hand, collect, sort, and sell recyclables gathered from households on the process of collection. Scavengers at the disposal site, whose main source less due to low prices in the dumpsite. Working and living condition in the dumpsite is generally unsatisfactory as revealed by the health survey. Traders and wholesalers are the real profit-makers in the scavengers in the disposal site, the government has implemented/encouraged resource recovery projects, to further boost recycling of recoverable refuse materials by providing subsidies to a number of municipalities in the Philippines. |
