AbstractThis study was carried out to assess the occupational noise levels, percentage exposure of noise to employees and to give possible recommendation for noise control, at K. Cotton and Gauze Company Ltd., situated in Pathumthani Province, Bangkok. An audiometric investigation was conducted on employees in occupations exposed to less noise, on spinners and on weavers who have put in three different services. The noise levels are above 80 db(A) in all the processing sections. Hence there is a difficulty in speech communication and a risk of hearing damage to employees. There is a possibility of noise induced permanent threshold shift (NIPTS) to employees attending on the carding and opened machines, to the spinners, winders, pirn winders and weavers. There is a significant difference in the hearing threshold levels (HTLS) of workers in the three different occupations, when tested and 1000, 2000 and 4000 Hz, except for the workers who have worked for 3-4 years, when tested at frequency 1000 Hz. the areas where the employees are subjected to the risk of NIPTS should be identified as ear protection areas, warning symbols at entrances to such areas should be posted, strict enforcement of the use of ear protectors and rotation of workers employed in such areas should be implemented. A health education programme, introduction of audiometric examination at the pre-employment medical examination and periodic checking of workers thereafter and installation of noise absorbing material in areas where noise levels exceed the recommended standards, are some of the suggestions to noise control in the factory.
