AbstractMethods of estimating the ultimate bearing capacity of shallow foundations on fine sand and predictions of settlements of such foundations were studied and analyzed. Study of the settlement predication method was also extended to the case of foundations resting on clayey silty sand. The study was based essentially on in-situ test results. Bearing capacity computation based on SPT and CPT results using empirical formula and conventional bearing capacity theories were made and compared to the experimental values from plate bearing tests. For settlement analysis part, the settlements of PBTs were used to establish the formula for further used in settlement prediction. Available data of 8 PBTs performed on sand at Chonburi, and 16 PBTs performed on clayey silty sand at Laem Chabang, and data of SPT and CPT performed closed to each plate test location lead to the following conclusion: (i) Correlations between SPT and relative density (Dr) of sand based on GIBBS & HOLTZ (1957) and SCHULTZE & MENZENBACH (1961) both give more reasonable values of Dr than the others. For the strength parameter of sand i.e.., 0-value, there is some evidence that values of 0 can be approximately determined from SPT result based on correlation between Dr and 0 given by DM 7.1 (1982) and from CPT results using DE BEER (1945) theory. Ultimate bearing capacity computed by HANSEN's formulae using these 0-values was found to be the most accurate while Terzaghi theroy was found to underestimate the bearing capacity. Computation using Peck, Hansen and Thornburn method gives the results much lower than the experiment. no empirical method, based on SPT and CPT results, gives accurate values of ultimate bearing capacity of all except some plates; however, rather high coefficients of correlation between calculated and experimental results were obtained for all methods studied. (ii) For settlement prediction using PBTs, correlations between CSR of 0.3m plate and SPT'N' values in sand and lateritic soils were established and method for extrapolating the settlement of 0.3m plate to the larger foundation was also studied. And, based on the proposed methods, the predicted settlements were found to be in agreement with the observed values. (iii) The existing methods of settlement prediction based on SPT were also investigated and it was found that some methods -e.g. PARRY (1971), OWEIS (1979), ARNOLD (1980) can be used with some accuracy. Approach based on CPT i.e.., SCHMERTMANN (1970) also yields acceptable predictions but less attractive than SPT approach.
