Abstract | The engineering geological mapping, rock masses survey and field testing, such as: Schmidt hammer test and point load test were carried out along the Sunua Highway. 15 sites were chosen for detailed study. The mechanical properties of different rock types were determined in the laboratory. Those testings constituted uniaxial compression test, direct shear test and physical properties test. The rock masses located at those sites were classified according to the RMR and the Q systems to evaluate their mechanical properties for the engineering work of slope, tunnel, and foundation. The possible slope failure modes were judged and their factors of safety were estimated. Not only dry but also saturated condition were analyzed by limit equilibrium method. The earthquake loading was also considered. Both pseudostatic analysis and relative displacement analysis were applied for the judgement of the slope safety. From this study some conclusions are inferrd. Firstly, the slope is more critical in the rainy season than under the earthquake loading. Secondly, the rock masses are fairly strong for foundations but the supporting is necessary for tunnelling through them. These results may be applied in the expansion project of the suhua Highway. |
