AbstractThe behaviour of sand subjected to a three dimensional stress system has been studied extensively during the past few years. However the behaviour of a rockfill material subjected to a three dimensional stress system has not been studied sufficiently. In this study a rockfill material was subjected to a three dimensional stress system by using a true triaxial apparatus with three flexible boundaries. The deformation of the rockfill material when the intermediate principal stress varied from the minor principal stress to the major principal stress was studied. The variation of the angle of internal friction, when the intermediate principal stress increased from the minor principal stress to the major principal stress was also investigated. In addition two plane strain tests were performed. It was observed that the rockfill samples prepared by the plunging method showed little anisotropic behaviour. The angle of internal friction represented as that corresponding to the volume contraction point showed a steed rise up to the vicinity of the plane strain condition and thereafter it gradually dropped till the extension condition was reached, with the value at extension being slightly greater than that at compression.
