Abstract | Engineering geology of the Chiew Larn power tunnel is investigated from the stand point of predicting rock reinforcement requirements. Most widely accepted three empirical support design methods , RSR (WI CK HAM et al , 1 97'1 ), RMR (BI ENIAWSK I), 1979 ) a n d NGI -Q system (BARTON et al , 1974 ) have been applied to this tunnel during excavation. After preparing a microcomputer program , the " Rock Support Interaction Analysis, an analytical method has also been applied to estimate supports. These predictions are compared in order to investigate the applicability a nd flexibility of each method to the rock condition uncounted. The results of this investigation indicate that the rock mass surrounding the tunnel is in fair quality. Comparison of three empirical methods shows that while all three methods are applicable to this tunnel the Q system is the most flexible method in cases of varying rock mass properties. Th e rock support interaction analysis, an analytical solution to support design problem also predicts similar supports which are comparable with empirical recommendations. |
