AbstractThe dynamic cone penetrometer is an inexpensive, simple apparatus to test the structural strength of highway pavements. It provides an economical way of testing pavement strength. The accuracy and reliability of the equipment and the test were studied in this research. Dynamic cone penetrometer tests were conducted on penetration macadam, Telford- base macadam, asphalt concrete and gravel roads. Tests were carried out at selected points with pavement conditions of good surface, rutted surface , cracked surface , and failed surfaces. The remaining lives of the pavement structures at each of these points were calculated using DCP tests, a nd the results wen'! compared with those obtained from using deflection-life relationship derived from standard Benkelman team tests. Materials suitable to fabricate the DCP equipment locally, and the modifications necessary on the instrument to carry out the tests with minimum time and effort, were also examined by this research. In addition , the pavement strength parameters obtained from the dynamic cone penetrometer were studied ·using the CHEV 5 computer program based on elastic theory developed by the Standard Oil Company of California. The deflections obtained were compared with those determined from Benkelman team tests.
