AbstractIndonesia is not only one of the most populated area but also the most volcanically active region in the world. It is constantly faced with serious volcanic hazards of enormous proportion. The most striking example is the volcanic are stretching from North Sumatera 5,000 km to East Banda Sea which consists of more than 135 volcanoes that have been active during the historical times. In the densely populated island of Java most of the inhabitants lives on the slopes of active volcanoes. They are always threatened by hazardous disaster from time to time by volcanic eruption. As a results, various methods of monitoring and mitigation have been applied to predict the volcanic activity of the three volcanoes in Java and to design and implement the protective and evacuation measure against these disasters. In connection with the hazard mitigation caused by secondary disaster the draining system, Sabo dam and remedial measures are adopted. It was also land use management in order to reduce the hazardous risk from the future eruptions of the volcanoes in Java.
