AbstractThe dynamic behavior to two rockfill dams is investigated, they are Chiew Larn and Kaeng Krung dams, located in south of thailand in Surattani Province. Chiew Larn is a zoned rockfill dam with clay core whereas Kaeng Krung is a rockfill dam with concrete face. The current practice in earthaquake analysis of rockfill dams is presented in the first part followed by the analysis of Chiew Larn and Kaeng Krung dams. The dynamic analyses were carreied out for full reservoir condition only. A design earthquake of magnitude 5.5, resulting in a peak acceleration of 0.3 g and a duration of 8s, is assumed. Seepage forces are considered for the clay-core rockfill dam. Hydrodynamic interaction effects are modelled by the added mass concept assuming incompressible behavior of water in the reservoir. The three-dimensional dam is idealized as a two-dimensional structure on rigid rock foundation. The following aspects of earthquake analysis of dams are considered: (1) Static analysis of dam. (2) Evaluation of seismicity at dam site and evaluation of design earthquake ground motion in terms of a response spectrum. (3) Dynamic analysis of dam. (4) Stability analysis of dam by considering two extreme rockfill materials. (5) Permanent deformations and dynamic slope stability of dam using NEWMARK's sliding block concept. The dynamic analysis showed that safety factors for 5% limited strain were greater than one for Chiew Larn dam and in the case of Kaeng Krung dam a small portion near the top of the upstream face had a material-related safety factor of one. Permanent slope displacements of about 35 cm are expected in both dams sue to the design earthquake actions.
