Abstract | A. seismic study of the proposed Liyutan Dam, a zoned earth-rock fill dam in Taiwan, is presented, based on a modern dynamic analysis. In the original design the conventional pseudo-static method was employed for the assessment of earthquake resistance. However, this is hardly adequate since the dam site is located near an active fault which was the sources of a destructive earthquake in 1935 with a magnitude of M = 7.10 For the seismic analysis a maximum credible and a design basis earthquakes with maximum ground accelerations of 0.77 g and 0.4 g respectively were used. Spectrum-compatible artificial acceleration time histories were generated by the computer program SIMQKE based on smooth design response spectra. The dynamic material properties used in the analyses were based on published data. The computer programs ISBILD and FLUSH were employed to compute the static and dynamic response of the dam. Material-related safety factors were determined according to Seed and a dynamic slope stability analysis was carried out based on Newmark's sliding block concept. The analysis indicates that the use of silty sand from the spillway excavation for the upstream shell is not suitable because a serious loss of strength (liquefaction) during the maximum credible earthquake is anticipated. Under the design basis earthquake, permanent strains and deformations are expected which may not be considered as acceptable, therefore a modified dam design is recommended. |
