AbstractThe analysis or beams resting on elastic foundation has been a topic of general interest for engineers. The present thesis also deals with this problem taking into account the nonlinear response of the subgrade on which the beams are resting. An iterative procedure is presented by taking the actual pressure versus settlement data from plate load test and the soil behaviour which in nonlinear incorporated into analysis. The various cases studied for uniform beam are: (i) Free-Free beam with Load at free ends, (ii) Free-Free Beam with Moment at free ends, (iii) Free-Free Beam with Load at mid span, (iv) Fixed-Fixed Beam with load at mid span, (v) fixed-Fixed Beam with Uniformly Distributed load. The analysis of tapered circular cross-section beam resting on bilinear foundation are presented in two cases: (i) Free-Free Tapered Beam with Load at free end, (ii) Free-Free Tapered Beam with Moment at free end. The governing differential equation along with boundary conditions for various cases are converted in nondimensional parameters. Various nondimensional parameters are assigned numerical values covering a wide range to study the effect of these parameters on the flexural response of beams. Based on these numerical results, non-dimensional charts have been presented which can be used for design purpose.
