AbstractTambo n youth centre (TYC) has been introduced as a type or rural youth development programme by the ~community Development Department more than a decade ago. Many criteria are used to select the more successful TYCs from the less successful ones. Youth participation is one of the most important factors in the effectiveness of TYCs. This research is an attempt to assess youth participation in TYC activities in terms of types of activities in which youth participate, the extent of youth participation in deciding and implementing TYC activities and to identify the significant differences between the more successful TYCs and the less successful ones and the reasons for these differences. Nakhon Ratchasima was selected as the study area because the researcher is familiar with the area and the local officers. However, due to time and budget limitation it was not possible to investigate all the factors that affect TYCs and their performance. Four districts in this province were selected to conduct a field survey by classifying into 2 categories - the more successful TYCs and the less successful TYCs. Two types of questionnaires were used for youth members of TYC and their parents. Free interview and group discussion were conducted and observations were also made for gathering basic information. The findings indicate that types of activities youth members wish to participate in are mainly occupational skill training especially, for non-agricultural activities but the present activities youth participate in are community activities such as road construction. There were not many significant differences between TYC A and TYC B but these differences showed that TYC A was more active and effective. The level of youth participation in TYC activities, decision-making and implementation is significantly different because the effectiveness of the TYC A committee and opportunity for youth members' participate in the decision-making process and implementation stages. Some possible recommendations are proposed in this study such as providing leadership training both in the village youth group and TYC and forming sub-committees of youth members for different activities to increase involvement of youth in leadership roles. Some further research should be undertaken : how to broad base TYC and village youth group organizational structures to give youth more opportunity to play responsible and active roles: the role of youth participation in decision-marking and implementation to provide more active involvement.
