Abstract | The economic activities of rural Bangladesh are still of the primary sector. It is necessary to reduce pressure on already overburdened agricultural sector, and at the same time create employment opportunities for the rural poor, and bridge the gap between urban - rural economic disparities. Promotion of rural non-farm activities can be one possibility to achieve the goal But no systematic study has been made so far regarding potential resources. Entrepreneurial development training also is poor in the country. It is an indepth study at a micro level to promote rural industraialisation based on local potential material and human resources. The study identifies a few material and human resources that can be utilised to promote rural industrialisation in the study area. At the same time, the study identifies the factors inhibiting the development of non-farm activities, like lack of information, lack of credit facilities, lack of entrepreneurial development training. Finally, the study suggests a few aspects like resource potential study, provision of few infrastructure, development of appropriate technologies, provision of need oriented credit system, activating policy framework for entrepreneurial development, and introduction of industrial cooperative, so that the few suggested industries can be set up for the emancipation of the socio-economic conditions of the rural poor and reducing pressure on the farm sector. |
