AbstractIn Nepal, efforts are being levelled to improve the agrimarketing situation through institutional as well as non-institutional measures. But despite these efforts, improvements have remained far below the expectations. Attempts made by institutional agents to emulate the present agrimarketing condition are ofter thwarted by the dominant role played by private middlemen or independent traders. This could be partly owing to farmers' unawareness of the benefit to be obtained from alternative agrimarketing systems and partly due to failure of public agencies to take firm steps. This study of farmers' perceptions of middlemen's performance in agricultural marketing reveals the general characteristics of farmers and middlemen of Duhubi Ideal Village Panchayat and explores how far the farmers are satisfied with the middlemen, what kind of agrimarketing facilities they are receiving from the middlemen and what types of and to what extent farmers are facing agrimarketing problems. Results derived from the statistical analyses indicate that farmers' perceptions of middlemen's performance depend on farmers' age, size and tenure of land holdings, sales volumes of certain major agricultural produce and educational attainment. Finally, recommendations are put forward to improve the present agrimarketing system, specially to explore the feasibility of sajha to become the alternative agent in agrimarketing.
