AbstractThis study is conducted to develop a new king of building material based on rice straw ash for use in the rural areas of the developing countries. An experimental programme was conducted to determine the properties of RSA, RSA mortar and concrete. For RSA the specific gravity, fineness, chemical composition, and pozzolanic activity index with lime and Portland cement were investigated. To determine the compressive strength of mortar, three mixes having constant consistence were tested. The RSA percentage was varied and both type I and type III cement were used. To investigate the influence of water cement ratio, and the curing conditions on the compressive strength, mortar with 35% RSA was used. Four mixes were used to find the optimum water content. The mechanical properties of RSA concrete which included the compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, modulus of elasticity, saturated density, resistance to acidic attack, and durability were studied and the results were compared with OPC concrete, and RHA concrete. it was found that the Sio2 content in RSA was approximately 30% lower and K2O content about six times higher than in RHA. According to ASTM requirements RSA can be classified as class C pozzolana. The test results indicated that the use of RSA in mortar is most effective in leaner mixes in terms of strength. RSA concrete showed slightly higher compressive strengths than OPC concrete and RHA concrete. The resistance to acidic attack was higher in RSA mortar and concrete than OPC mortar and concrete. The resistance to sulphate and sea water attack is also greater.
