AbstractThe purpose of this experimental investigation is to study the properties of ferrocement using rice husk ash (RHA) cement mortar. The properties to be investigated are compressive strength, tensile strength, flexural strength, impact strength, heat of hydration of cement and acidic resistance. Information concerning these properties is obtained by a comparison of the properties of ferrocement specimens using rice husk ash cement mortar with those using Portland cement mortar of the same mix proportions and number of wire mesh layers. The test results revealed that the application of rice husk ash cement resulted in a decrease in the compressive strength, tensile strength and the flexural strength of ferrocement. The impact strength of ferrocement was considerably improved when the rice husk ash was used in place of Portland cement. The rice husk ash cement mortar indicated a better resistance to acidic attack than the Portland cement mortar. The heat of hydration of RHA cement is lower than that of Portland cement. The application of RHA in the ferrocement is possible.
