AbstractA microcomputer package mPANEL for the analysis and limit state design of unbonded post-tensioned flat slabs is developed. The tendons are assumed to be concentrated along column strips. The program is written in Microsoft BASIC under the CP/M operating system. In this study, the limit state design concept is followed considering the serviceability limit states and the limit state of ultimate load. For the ultimate load analysis the lower bound theorem of plasticity theory is used taking into account a Johansen yield criterion. The ultimate load is determined by analyzing a typical rectangular slab element with corner supports. By analyzing this element it is assumed that in the ultimate state each slab element is carrying its own portion of the load without affecting the adjacent elements, this had the advantage that edge, corner and interior slab elements can be treated in the same way. Two examples are presented to illustrate the capability and efficiency of the program. Results are compared with design methods proposed by ACI Code 318-83 (equivalent frame method) and the VSL method (upper bound ultimate load). The comparison shows that the proposed procedure is reasonable and gives an acceptable design. Because the lower bound theorem is used the design is always conservative.
