AbstractTo design a composite breakwater, a lot of available information and various design criteria have been proposed recently. this study tries to syn-thesis all the information and criteria, and make an integrated feature of the design principles. From this study, it is found that Goda's formula is the most useful one for the design of composite breakwater, A design example is done by using Goda's formula and it is compared with the designs using Sainflou and Hiroi's formula' in some case of breaking wave condition, Goda's formula yields smaller wave force but the width of vertical wall is wider because it includes the effect of uplifting force due to overtopping. From each possible case of the design example, it is found that for the same water depth, the increase of thickness of rubble mound, will firstly cause the decrease of the total wave pressure and will firstly cause the decrease of the total wave pressure and will firstly cause the decrease of the total wave pressure and will firstly cause the decrease of the total wave pressure and then increase later, when the thickness of rubble mound increases, the width of vertical wall will increase too for most cases, since it needs to increase the stability against sliding, But in some deep water cases, when increase the thickness of rubble mound from the very low thickness to the high value will firstly decrease the width for vertical wall and then increase later. It's because firstly the control factor is the bearing capacity of the mound and the in changes to the stability against sliding. A computer program written by Goda is included for future applications.
