AbstractAn accessible approach for detection of instability mechanisms is performed to establish a reliable stability criteria used for practical purpose. The fulfillment of this criteria will directly beneficial to the intention of saving computer time which is usually a huge consumption for numerical computation. To this end, a simplified Fourier stability analysis including the extended von Neumann stability condition is practiced on a selected two-dimensional hydrodynamic model. The extended von Neumann condition is the further development from original von Neumann condition as well as the other theoretical versions in literature. A computer program, Stability Criteria Program (SCP), is thus established to provide the whole analyses, and give judgement on numerical stability of the computation of (i) a laboratory channel-pool model and (ii) a prototype lagoon of Songkhla. If is found that SCP can serve well for the prediction of stability results in computations, especially the small time increment is used. After the determination of characteristic value, the stability criteria formula in this study can approximately achieve the same effect as that of SCP.
