AbstractFlooding in the Cilamaya river has been studied. A mathematical model consisting of unsteady free surface flow equation is developed to compute the flood flow condition along the river containing straight and loop portion. The method for solving numerical solutions of governing equations is the finite difference approximation of implicit scheme. The model computation at the junction shows that the condition at the junction with the assumption that the specific energy are same, give almost the same result as the assumption that the water level in the junction is horizontal. The model is calibrated using the flood data in May and December 1983 and then verified by using flood data in December 1983 and January 1984 to check the validity of Manning n. Good agreement between the computed and observed water levels are obtained. From sensitivity analysis it is found that by increasing or decreasing of Manning 'n' by 10%, the computed water levels in the channel do not give significant change on the computed water levels and discharges. After the calibration and verification, the model is applied to determine the effectiveness of alternative flood control scheme in term of change in water level. For the individual flood control measures investigated, the most effective scheme along the Cilamaya river is channel dredging while the combination between bypassing and channel dredging is the best combination compared to other combinations. This is gives the most significant reduction of flood levels along Cilamaya river. The result of this study has been discussed with the Institute of Hydraulic Engineering, Bandung, Indonesia and it can be used to solve the problems in this area.
