AbstractThe transformation of waves upon interacting with platform type breakwaters are investigated. The characteristics of wave reflection, wave transmission and energy losses for different incident waves generated by wind are studies. Horizontal surface plates of different lengths and thicknesses are tested for four wind velocities in a two dimensional wave flume. The experiment uses an analog-to-digital converter and a microcomputer to record wave data in digital form and to analyse those data. The Wave Spectrum Method is used to analyse the wave date. After analysis, the figures of autocorrelation and wave spectrum are plotted directly by the microcomputer printer. The frequency spectra were compared with the Pierson - Moskowitz Spectrum. The coefficients of reflection, transmission and energy loss are compared with Stoker's mathematical model and Dattatri's experimental results. the experimental results are found to be of the same trend as that of the existing theoretical results and the previous researchers' experimental data. The experimental results show the variation of the reflection coefficient, transmission coefficient and energy loss coefficient with the ratio of plate length to wave length (B/L), and the ratio of plate thickness to plate length (t'/B). The coefficient of reflection increases and the coefficient of transmission decreases with the increasing ratio of B/L. It is concluded that energy losses are significant for platform breakwaters which make the incident waves break on top of the platform.
