AbstractBetter water management appears to be the major factor to add to the limited and inadequate water supplies for agricultural pursuits in Pakistan. Watercourse improvement in this regard, plays an important role for more water supplies for irrigation in fields and hence, increasing crop production. It contributes towards improving the watercourse efficiencies e.g., conveyance and distribution. In this study, 12 watercourses were studied, Among them three were unimproved ones. The research was conducted on, to measure the effects of different types of watercourse improvement practices, and to evaluate the most suitable site of watercourse improvement practices, and to evaluate the most suitable site to watercourse for partial lining. Necessary surveys were made to collect the required information. Discharge measurements were made with cut-throat flumes to determine the different watercourse efficiencies, before and after improvement. The results indicate that there is a considerable increase in watercourse efficiencies due to improvement works. The farmers of the tail reach have been benefitted up to the maximum extent. Saving of time, water and labour is commonly reported by farmers. The most suitable site of watercourse for partial lining is found to be at the head reach.
