AbstractThe Choshui river basin planning in ROC-Taiwan for power generation and irrigation has been approached through linear programming. The separable programming capability of MPSX/370 is fully taken advantage of to incorporate the nonlinearities inherent in the cost functions of dams, tunnels, surgetank, forebay, penstock and powerhouse. The nonlinear relation of effective head versus storage content of reservoirs and incorporated through an iterative procedure. The system consists of 2 reservoirs, one diversion, 3 powerhouse existing and 20 diversions, 2 tail race reservoirs, 19 tunnels, 9 powerhouses and 2 pumped storage facilities proposed. It is not possible to consider the problem in one formulation as the number of variables are extremely large. A suitable scheme to divide the system into subsystems and to combine them into a single system is attempted.
