AbstractA detailed simulation of the complete Mahaweli Ganga System in Sri Lanka consisting of eleven reservoirs, four diversion structures, interconnecting river reaches, canals and tunnels is attempted. As the system is still under construction and the operation of the system seems to be an essential task. Care is taken in this study to maintain both reality and feasibility. SIMYLD II model, developed by Texas Water development Board, is used to simulate planning and operation of Mahaweli Ganga reservoir system. The basic technique in SIMYLD II is the Out-of-Kilter algorithm. Historical inflow data for 30 years were available on the Mahaweli Ganga system and these data are used to study the system operation under four different conditions. They are namely, (i) General operation (ii) Operation in a dry year (iii) Operation in a wet year and, (iv) Firm yield operation. For all four conditions, the first priority is given to meet irrigation demands and other suitable priorities are given to meet hydro-power demands at various power plants. The results are given in the form of operating rules, diversion policies, irrigation and hydro-power benefits corresponding to different operational condition. Also, some of these results have been compared with those estimated in a previous study.
