AbstractThe results of a mathematical model for calculating 2-D depth averaged concentration distribution resulting from a co-stream and cross-stream jets have been compared with measurements in a laboratory channel in steady flow conditions. Due to the importance of shear flow the mathematical model uses the k-e turbulence model to predict the local distribution of eddy viscosity and eddy diffusivity. The depth averaged model uses a simplified sedimentation model to simulate the net deposition of sediment. In the cross stream jet in which the re-circulation region is important, the elliptic procedure is used to solve the 2-D depth averaged equations. In the co-stream jet, the elliptic equations of the model is simplified to the parabolic equations, and they are solved using stream line coordinate and down stream marching integration procedure. Comparison of the predicted values of the velocity and concentration with the experimental results has revealed close agreements. The 2-D depth averaged model developed for solute transport could be extended to the sediment transport problems by inclusion of a simplified sedimentation model.
