Abstract | A complete understanding of the process of the process of sediment transport caused by the passage of oscillatory water waves over a mobile sediment bed is possible only when the phenomena of sedimentary ripple generation and migration are quantified. Experiments are carried out in a wave flume to observe the transient growth and migration of sedimentary ripples on a sloping bed and the resulting net sediment transport. Different bed configurations of medium sand with bed slopes of 1:20 and 1:10, and fine sand on a 1:20 bed slope are investigated. Small amplitude wave theory is utilized to calculate the water particle excursion amplitude and the velocity amplitude at the bed. Qualitative observations are also made of the process and relative magnitudes of sediment suspension generated by the presence of ripples. Analysis of ripple growth and migration leads to the development of empirical formulae using dimensionless groups for a transient model of ripple height, ripple length, mean and maximum celerity of ripple. From observed successive be profile changes, empirical formulae using the densiometric sediment Froude number are also developed for the net volumetric sediment transport. the transport is compared with bed load measurements from sediment traps placed in the bed. |
