AbstractA computationally efficient numerical groundwater modelling technique is developed to express explicitly the aquifer response as a function of the external excitation applied on the aquifer through the generation of Discrete Kernel functions for a linear and a stationary system. This study consists of two phases; the first is a simulation study followed by an optimization study. In the first the Discrete Kernels are generated for a fully confined aquifer system by means of a fully implicit scheme of finite difference. These kernels are then stored to obtain the drawdown at any reference point, resulting from any known distribution of excitations be simply convoluting the excitations with the corresponding Kernel. In the second phase of the study these drawdowns are used as the constraints in the linear optimization model, which maximizes the total with drawl of water within a specified time period. The model developed is studied by applying it to a fully confined aquifer system underlying Bangkok. The aquifer is the Nakhon-Luang aquifer.
