Abstract | Increasing congestion on roads in the metropolitan region and increasing usage of private vehicles are the serious issues that affected the development of the transportation sector. Thailand is facing a serious problem in providing transportation facilities to elder people and there is a huge economic loss due to road traffic congestion because of too many vehicles on a limited road network. To provide a solution for these massive issues, it is important to identify the factors influencing to choose the mode for traveling by the people. All of the factors are related to socio-economic and service attributes. The study is based on a questionnaire survey that was carried out in Bangkok and other provinces of Thailand. A binary logit model was applied in order to calibrate utility function for public transport. Findings derived from the statistical analysis suggest that gender, age, average income, auto ownership, career, travel cost, waiting time and distance from to station are found to be influential factors for travelers’ mode choice behavior. The study also found that auto ownership and distance from home to station are the most influential factor for elderly people (above 60 years). The findings can provide helpful information for public transport operators to achieve a higher mode share split by improving the service quality of public transport in terms of providing more convenience and a better service environment for elder people. |
