Abstract | In past few years Thailand recorded the highest road traffic fatality rate among the Asian region and significantly 70% accidents were related to motorcyclists. It then became critical for Thailand to understand the perception of motorcyclist’s risk when riding in both urban and rural areas. In so doing, three studies were implement along parallel line so that the results could be compared. First study investigates relationship among personal characteristics, risky riding behaviour, traffic violation and risk perception of motorcyclist using Structural Equation Model. The second one was analysis motorcyclists risk perception by using Accident Predictor Trainer (APT). Third study was an analysis of actual accident involving at least one motorcyclists and compare it with anxiety reported by riders. From study 1 identified that there is a positive relationship between risk perception and personal characteristics also on traffic violations. The main finding from study 2 is that different methods of survey will provide different results regard to motorcyclist risk perception. Comparing the results from studies revealed a gap between objective and perceived risk of Thailand rides. In fact, they underestimate the accident risk when get through the traffic by riding on shoulder, exceed the speed limit, keep short distance between vehicles. |
