AbstractThis study explores the effectiveness of HOV lanes on Bangkok’s Expressway Network by applying dynamic microscopic traffic simulation. This study examines whether the implementation of HOV lanes on freeways could help in minimizing traffic congestion or not. One congested segment between the intersection of Prachachuen-Parkkred Road and Samsen interchange, on the Si Rat Expressway, was selected as a study area in this thesis to design the HOV lanes. The time for simulating the model is evening peak hour, from 15:00 to 18:00. The two types of HOV lanes, limited access, and continuous access were evaluated and compared, to conclude whether one of these HOV lanes could provide the advantages in existing traffic congestion or not. This study found that the implementation of HOV lanes can reduce the probability of congestion in the study area, and more, HOV lanes have a smoothing effect that increase the discharge flows on adjacent general purpose lanes at this area. When comparing the two types of HOV facilities, the limited access HOV have more advantages in reducing total stopped times and travel time savings than continuous access HOV lane.
